BioDiv Checker – Remote Sensing Analytics

The BioDiv Checker is a service to acquire and analyze remote sensing images for applications within ecological and sustainable land use. The service supports the following processes:


  • Satellite based analytics for ecological land use
  • Check size, health and biodiversity of farmland and aquacultures
  • Validate plausibility of harvest amounts and field sizes
  • Promote transparency in marine management and ecological farming


The BioDiv Checker enables verifications of ecological certification requirements in the
beginning of the supply chain.


navama developed this new service concept in cooperation with Ma Chung Research Center for Photosynthetic Pigments (MRCPP), Universitas Ma Chung, Indonesia to analyze and monitor ecological land use. The service is based on semi-automatical processing of UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) and satellite images to extract key parameters for an improved monitoring process. To ensure a close link to eco-farming and eco certification requirements this service was developed together with Naturland e.V., Germany, a ground-breaking global pioneer for eco certification.

We calculate farm field sizes, tree heights, tree densities, aquaculture pond dimensions and mangrove compositions automatically out of remote sensing data. We offer this service for our customers to ensure an ecological land use integrated in a profound nature conservation strategy.

The BioDiv Checker  is integrated into the navama geoservice, which allows our customers an interactive access to analytical results. It is also possible to use this interactive maps as a web map service within customer owned web presentations.


In the above map you can interactively check the pond sizes of aquacultures in Probolingo, Indonesia based on remote sensing image analysis. Zoom in and click on a pond to get the size in squaremeters.


And the following interactive map shows results of aquacultures close to Chongon in Ecuador. The satellite images are automatically processed to calculate the pond surfaces, usages and the surrounding mangrove forests and other land use. The aquacultures within the red polygon are managed according to Naturland standards. The surrounding mangrove forests are part of reforestation activities to ensure a higher biodiversity and ecological landuse.
