smartTrack is an open platform for GPS devices to support small scale and artesanal fisheries.  The basics for all IMG_20160218_140015_straceability and transparent fishery management is a reliable monitoring of vessel positions. navama works since 5 years on affordable methods and technologies to increase transparency of catch in marine resources. After establishing  methods to use AIS as a global, affordable option we follow now even more low cost configurations. We source “free market” devices from GPS positioning with access to GSM or satellite networks and integrate the data stream into seeOcean, our open analytical platform for marine resource management.

End of February we installed successfully together with WWF Philippines 12 devices on fishery vessels in Philippines. We installed various configurations (GSM, satellite data transfer, solar panel, batteries) to test reliability in oceans, but also the acceptance by fisheries. The full pilot is now up and running and we can see “real-time” data within seeOcean explorer which we share with the local WWF team and the fisheries.

We thanks WWF Philippines for the support of the project and especially a huge thank you to the fishermen who where tremendous open for this project and very supportive.

In 6 weeks we will update you here with more details and results of the pilot run.
