Intensity of ships/boats on the ocean and EEZ waters and international waters of Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands is a looming threat for marine mammals.
The intensity of vessels around the Galapagos Islands and offshore/coastal marine waters of continental Ecuador becomes an increasing threat for marine mammals. navama supports Dr. Juan Jose Alava, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, Vancouver, Canada with AIS analytics in his research work to increase protection status of marine mammals. Under special focus are potential impacts by collisions, entanglements and pollution risks, acoustic noise and chemical spills. Galapagos sea lions, coastal bottle-nose dolphins and temporal or migratory species like humpback whales are especially endangered marine mammals.
The analytics where done by navama within seeOcean based on AIS data from ORBCOMM satellites.
