navama – technology for nature and the Federeal Association for Bird Protection in Bavaria (Landesbund für Vogelschutz in Bayern e.V.) jointly held an information booth at Munich Science Days from 25.11 till 28.11.2017. The information booth entitled “new ways for improved protection of the Isar” took place as part of the hotspot project “Alpine river landscapes – live diversity from Ammersee to Zugspitze”. It was about the protection of endangered gravel breeders, such as the little ringed plover and sandpiper, which are very sensitive to disturbances during their breeding season. However, gravel banks along the Isar are recreational areas for humans. So how can nature conservation and recreational use along the Isar be reconciled? navama has developed the Kiesbank-Checker app in collaboration with the LBV e.V. and Lebensraumlechtal e.V. to inform people about breeding seasons and temporal barring orders. The app automatically shows users if they are in an area along the Isar that is not allowed to enter due to bird breeding times. The Kiesbank-Checker does not require an internet connection after the download. At the information booth, around 800 visitors were able to test the app.
